ECOS Club
For children too old for the YNC there exists a club that looks into natural history, conservation and outdoor skills a little deeper. The ECOS (Environmental Conservation and Outdoor Skills) club meets on Saturday afternoons after the YNC. The club usually attracts around 10 children between 12 and 16 years of age to each meeting and is led by two members of the Ranger Naturalist team. Given that the kids are older and the groups are smaller there is much more scope for some more “adventurous” activities. The group’s activities alternate between practical conservation tasks such as removing invasive vegetation from the ponds or “ Rhodo – bashing” and more fun activities where they learn about survival skills, or are set a problem solving challenge against the clock.
We also try and go on at least one full day excursion off the Park in the year. In 2007 we visited Ben Lawers, staying overnight and visiting the Ben Lawers Reserve and the Crannog Centre on Loch Tay.
The ECOS club is a good all round club for young people looking for something a little different. Occasionally we will hold our meetings in the evenings for watching wildlife or star gazing. It can even count towards certain aspects of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award!
